In Springfield, take Capitol Avenue west to 2nd Street.  Continue South on 2nd Street until South Grand
Avenue.  (south is part of the street name - NOT a direction)  Turn west onto South Grand.  Continue until
MacArthur Blvd.  Turn South, continue until Wabash Ave, where you'll go West.  When you reach Chatham
Rd, turn South.
This is old Route 4 (before the Mall).  As you travel south, you'll crossover I-72.  Continue until you reach
Woodside Rd.  Turn west.  At "new" Route 4 (stop light), turn south.

Travel through Chatham.  From the south edge of Chatham, staying on Route 4, go 4 miles.  Turn West
onto Snell Rd.  Follow the brick road (it's red, not yellow) as it curves South into Curran Rd.  Turn south
back onto Route 4

Follow Route 4 south to Thayer.   Watch for the Historic Route 66 signs guiding you through Thayer and
back onto Route 4 south.  Continue through Virden, Girard, Nilwood (look for the turkey tracks), Carlinville,
Gillespie, Benld, Sawyerville and Staunton.

Find a detailed map of Staunton for the various alignments there.

Continue South on Route 4 to Edwardsville.    You'll need a detailed map to follow this alignment on into
Hamel.

If you want to jump back to the I-55 alignment, you can take Route 104 east in Auburn; Farmversville Rd
east in Girard, Route 108 east in Carlinville, Route 16 east in Gillespie or Route 138 east in Benld.
Bob Waldmire's postcards: ranging from Route 66 maps of states & places to the "Liver" &
"Pancreas".  If you happen to miss the Cozy Dog Drive In, we have a couple of their
souvenirs for purchase.
